The lighting can be used to make 150 people feel ‘warm and peaceful’ or ‘cool and clinical’,
because we believe that changing the ambience of a room can raise people’s productivity.

The control within the Sherbourne Suite has raised my expectations of what is possible, as
we now have pre-set scenes, so anyone can walk into the room and highlight the stage, or the presenter, or dim the front to draw people to the screen.

Before now lighting has always been seen as a complex system that can only be used in a rigid way,
but the solution Leamington Sight and Sound Ltd have provided can be easily setup and used by anyone.

It just works!!

I now wouldn’t considered a room to be dimmable, if it didn’t smoothly adjust over 177 levels!

Good morning,
We have received positive feedback with regards to the works completed at Pub 6180, The Mile Castle, Newcastle. Leamington attended and reprogrammed the sound system, saving approximately 12k of replacements. It was reported that the entire process was managed well by Colin (Leamington) whilst providing regular updates.
We wished to make you aware that the Maintenance Team sends their thanks for the support given to this pub. This positive feedback has been logged and will be noted to the business in next week’s reporting and held for discussion at your next service review meeting.
Thank you for your ongoing support of .

I am writing to thank you for the completion of the improvements to the Sound & Lighting systems at Didcot Girls' School.

The project has successfully upgraded the sound and lighting equipment in our drama studio and main hall, as well as provided a new outdoor PA system for sports events - all on a very tight budget. Other companies were quoting us significantly higher prices and much more complicated equipment and I am not sure that they would have left us with a solution that would have worked as effectively.

The time that you spent with our teachers and students discussing the project really helped ensure you understood our specific needs and has enabled you to provide a system that works extremely well and is expandable in the future when we have funds to improve further.

Your flexible approach enabled a fast installation around the school day and it is always reassuring to know that you are only a phone call away when we need a quick bit of advice.

I would strongly recommend Leamington Sight & Sound to any school considering investing in the audio visual systems as, in our experience, customer service has been excellent and we have achieved extremely good value for money.

Yours sincerely

Not a bad year overall with installations in several town centre venues for some of our larger clients, all completed to a very high standard, to both ours and our client's satisfaction. Quite a number of these included pixel pads and LED tape, as well as the usual club lighting to further enhance the flow through from the dance floor to the rest of the venue.

We also installed some smaller systems for other clients such as a wireless microphone system, with good quality ceiling speakers with the control installed in a beech cabinet to fit in with the decor of the building.

This was all on top of our regular new build program for our food led client, the usual reactive service work and the odd emergency call, so as you can imagine never a dull moment.

2015 looks to be shaping up already with installs for several private clients and the regular scheduling of first fixes that always occur at this time of year, so hopefully will be a good omen for the rest of the year. We will keep you posted. Now, is it beer o'clock yet?

It's now complete and opens Nov 5th – which by the way is our 30th birthday! LSS has been going and growing for 30 years and OH what a ride. But less about our age...

Fitted digital sound limiters to a background music system in a foodie pub, seemed like overkill but the planning officers want what the planning officers want! Then onwards and upwards, literally – our degree in levitation finally paid off when we were called in to repair a projector that was 7 meters in the air! Then something that resembled more of a cinema screen than a TV, into a pub in Manchester just in time for the local derby – which they lost – mustn't have taken it too badly as haven't had any calls about TV repair! We installed a video interface for an interactive quiz in a large high street venue up north, mind bending – but nothing we can't handle!

This week on Wednesday we were training a few guys for Soundweb Digital sound processing software and then had to find a cure for a pub with 4G phone interference – the remedy turned out to be cute – yes, cute - filters and then finishing off the week installing and programming a Show Magic lighting control software package for a town center venue in Henley-On-Thames, Pimms o'clock anyone?

We'll leave you with a word from the wise...

We worked out lighting control for local club install, and then completed a general service and major overhaul, and re-programmed the new design at a town centre venue Leicester - slightly mind bending but satisfying jobs!

Today is a little less intense, the plan is goes something like Office – Finance – meeting – pub. If the finance is bad then today will become Office – Finance – Pub – stuff the meeting – so we'll just have to see how it goes!

Thought of the week - Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

We never like to complain about being busy but you know, if you unplug a keyboard and mouse it’s always a good idea to plug it back in the right way round, we've found that A. it then works and B. you don’t have a disaster lighting wise on your Saturday night...Not to worry though, being the experts that we are; we program our light set up to do their own thing in the event of no control being received, would have been a long way to go to find out the cables were plugged in the wrong ports!

We've been right round the UK this week; on Monday we got going on site in Southampton, working on a major student venue going through a rebrand and full overhaul – new AV set up, big screens, wiring, architectural and LED lighting plans, we will expand on this one soon, should be interesting! By the time we got home to bed it was time get up and get to North Wales to install a piece of kit that's a local authority requirement to help a client keep their entertainment license and liaising with EHO to keep everyone happy!

Wednesday we were in Manchester for The Essential Install Live Show, some very interesting pieces of kit!

We thankfully settled back down yesterday, in the office designing plans and project discussions with clients, menial office admin jobs and planning for next week. Right now, we have a few bits to finish off and then we're off to the pub to pray for a peaceful weekend...
Are architects being kept up to date with emerging technology within building management systems when it comes to Audio/Visual systems and lighting controls?

We've been in the business long enough to have experienced architects not thinking about the AV or lighting systems until AFTER structural designs habeen done, creating a drawn out processes and costing the client more money. It's an understandable situation; architects don't have the time or facilities to become experts in audio-visual, but that's why people like us exist!

Commercial architects face a demanding task in keeping abreast of building techniques, new design concepts and government legislation, so it is entirely understandable for them to concentrate on those aspects of their jobs rather than to investigate the intricacies of AV, lighting and control systems. The design of a complex lighting system is not something that an architects practice is likely to be able to undertake in-house. Their focus is on the fabric of the building, it's usability and look-and-feel, ensuring compliance with local regulations and energy management targets, and on top of that be aware of what is achievable and be able to calculate the cost of including the system components.

There are manufacturers who design and develop more integrated systems as one-stop-shop solutions but their ability to meet clients particular needs can be compromised. Alternatively, architects can turn to independent consultants for guidance; it's important to become involved at the initial phase of a project, drawing up functional specifications etc as often it’s too late to incorporate things when the building is all but finished; Audio-visual control is not an add-on but an intrinsic part of a finished project.

The interiors and exteriors of modern buildings that are highly stylised, with changing lighting, signage and comprehensive AV systems, are often linked to integral building management systems and it's the role of the integrator or consultant to advise on what can and cannot be done, risking unpopularity and resistance from the architects who are generally keen to try any and every technique that will make their building stand out. Technology changes all the time, and often the architect will have seen something that they have latched onto which isn't suited to their project.

Professional bodies throughout the world serve to extend the skills and professional competence of architects through on-going training programmes. In the UK, the CPD program of RIBA lists technical innovations as one of its mandatory core curriculum subjects. Seminars and roadshows hosted by at RIBA offices or architectural practices provide an opportunity for integrators and trade bodies to present technical material and meet architects face to face. The CPD programme develops architects knowledge to enable them to understand the broad concepts of available technology and to develop their confidence in dealing with system integrators and in drawing up safe specifications at an early stage.
As independent AV consultants, for a vast range of commercial venues, Leamington Sight and Sound provide unbiased advice tailored to architects and their clients needs. As product and service providers, we benefit from having architectural technologies in our organisation, and so can liaise with architects on their terms, thus creating long term relationships and high levels of trust; essential in generating business.

This has been a great week for Leamington Sight and Sound, having been selected to be a Registered System Integrator in the Shure Quality Network.

In common with many leading manufacturer Shure Distribution have sought to align themselves with a very limited number of partners with the highest levels of technical knowledge, experience and customer service. To be selected partners must demonstrate professional competence to design and set up professional audio systems based on the customer’s requirements and to install these systems at locations such as business facilities, arenas, TV stations, airports, churches, concert halls, cruise liners, museums governmental buildings, schools, stadiums, studios, theatres and outside broadcast vehicles. In addition to the highest levels of product knowledge and experience, attaining the title of Registered System Integrator required demonstrating a commitment to the highest standards of customer service, technical support and repair services.

We feel rightly proud therefore to have been chosen to be one of this very select number and as such are now official retailers for not only the full range of Shure products including microphones, wireless systems, mixers, headphones and phono cartridges, but also for brands including QSC amplifiers and speakers, SKB cases, DIS, Monster Cables, myMix, Primacoustic, Servoreeler and Tonebone.

We look forward to a long and fruitful association with Shure Distribution as a part of the Shure Quality Network.

The 4G Freeview Fail could prevent hundreds of thousands of homes from getting Freeview, forcing them to install signal filters if they’re to continue watching Freeview.

The (previous) government may be to blame for the poor planning that's lead to the clash of Freeview and 4G, but it's the mobile networks who will be stumping up the cash to fund a company called Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited.

AT800.tv - the public name for Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited (formerly known as MitCo) - will oversee the provision of 4G signal filters which people can connect to their Freeview aerial to help tune out 4G interference.

They're already available AT A PRICE, but if you've got an amplifier in the loft or on your aerial and you need to get a man in to fix it, the cost of installing 4G signal filters should be covered by the provision of £50 vouchers (I don’t think so) which will be handed out to the homes that need them. No one has discussed commercial premises yet ???? Bet we don’t get the vouchers.

UK minister for culture, communications and creative industries, Ed Vaizey, has announced: Only 900,000 are likely to rely on “Freeview” for their primary viewing, so in effect, fewer than a million people will be directly affected. The rest will be viewing television on satellite cable or broadband. Oh really Mr Vaizey! With this in mind it’s likely at this stage that vouchers will be made available for 900,000 homes, despite around 2.3 million homes affected.

4G Freeview Fail: How will it affect Freeview?

Retunes

The first problem is that some Freeview signals already use the lower end of the 800MHz band, so they will have to be moved before 4G networks can launch on these frequencies.

The affected areas will be notified in advance, and are currently going through a retune similar to the Digital Switchover. No-one will need a new Freeview box at this point, although some people may need a new aerial.

Adjacent interference

The second problem is that the international engineering teams which assigned the 4G signals to 800MHz didn't leave a large enough 'guard interval' between the bottom of the 800MHz band and the top of the 700MHz band, because radio signals always overspill a little from their assigned frequencies. No-one knows why, but the suspicion is that they were all mobile communications experts, and no-one bothered to ask a broadcast TV expert to check detail.

Mobile phone signals are likely to leak across from 800MHz and interfere with some TV at the top end of 700MHz, and in some cases it can be fixed with a simple filter, but in others the interference will be too strong, and TVs will lose some of their Freeview channels.

Out-of-channel interference

We've all heard the clicks and pops when someone is talking on a microphone and there's a mobile phone in their pocket. The microphone wire acts as an aerial and can pick up all kinds of frequencies if they're strong enough.

Digital TV boxes aren't designed to filter out interference from devices using the 800MHz, so even Virgin Media cable boxes could be affected if there's a 4G dongle or handset close by.

What if I still can’t get Freeview after installing a filter?

Ed Vaizey has announced that there will be assistance for homes to switch to 'free-to-view satellite' (Freesat) or 'cable TV' (Virgin Media) if they can’t get Freeview after 4G arrives.

In cases where dishes can’t be fixed to homes or cable isn’t available (Ofcom estimates 500) it instead 'may be appropriate to look at alternative ways of restoring good DTT reception, up to a limit of £10,000 per household'.

For those not in this category, it is estimated that at the most, 38,000 homes will be offered Virgin Media or Freesat.

Which mobile networks will affect Freeview?

EE (incorporating Orange and T-Mobile) has already launched 4G on the 1800MHz band. This is entirely separate to the 800MHz band which Freeview currently uses and therefore will not interfere with it.

As the 4G auction kicks off in the UK other networks will use the 800MHz band for their 4G services, which will interfere with Freeview reception in some areas.

Currently, the UK mobile networks use three frequency bands - 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2.1 GHz - to broadcast 2G voice and 3G data services, but Ofcom is currently considering a plan to allow them to use this for 4G as well.

As a condition of the Orange and T-Mobile merger, it's expected that Three will be gifted a portion of the 1800MHz band to use for 4G. Again, this will not interfere with Freeview.

Ofcom's 4G auction has allocated parts of the 800MHz and 2.6GHz spectrum for 4G services, and it's the 800MHz portion which will cause problems.

SO THERE YOU HAVE IT – “OH HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN”

The brief at Shirley was for the fitting of outdoor patio speakers to integrate with their existing audio system and modification of their current amplifier to enable the simultaneous use of two microphones. Additionally we checked that their radio microphone frequencies were legal following the changes in regulations after the diital switch over (DSO).

*******

In the UK, the use of cordless radio microphones, in ear monitoring and other wireless audio equipment by bands, music venues, theatres, schools, dance / aerobics classes, communitiy centres and similar is classed as Program Making and Special Events (PMSE). The radio frequencies in which most wireless microphones operated prior to the UK Digital Switch Over during 2011 / 2012 cannot now be used and so it is likely that most existing radio wireless microphone and other wireless audio equipment will have been affected by the new UK wireless regulations. If in doubt why not give us a call and we will be happy to explain the changes and advise if you are affected.

*******

Leamington and County Golf Club needed a way for visiting acts to plug into their existing sound system, a simple matter for us to fit an interface plate whilst we extended the system to incorporate the snooker and television rooms.

After suffering from the floods of last November the Talardy Hotel in St.Asaph is now on the way to re-opening and we were pleased to be able to return there last week to re-install the sound and lighting systems in preparation for that happy event. We wish them all the best for the re-opening and a trouble free future.

Instead of a mish-mash of old non-compliant equipment they are now the proud owners of six Sennheiser G3 series systems including headsets and lapels which are awaiting frequency allocation by the Joint Frequencies Management Group.

We are looking forward to returning soon to replace their hard of hearing loop system for a much improved infra-red transmitter system.

Following our installation of sound and lighting systems at a Marstons new build pub in Telford we were asked if we could "illuminate a cow". Thankfully the task didn't involve chasing bovines round a field with torches, but rather using colour-scrolling LED light on a metal sculpture to create a striking feature which visitors to the Grazing Cow will remember!

More pics are on our Facebook page so have a look and let us know what you think!

After a 'quiet' Christmas and New Year, and following our fitting of a Formula Sound Sentry noise monitoring unit, the White Hart in Ashton-on-Trent are now able to resume their entertainment schedule. By installing this unit and liasing with the local EHO on level settings, they can now demonstrate to the licensing authority that noise at the venue is properly regulated.

We are always happy to give free advice on noise control issues, if you should find yourself in a similar predicament.

Also last week was a milestone moment for us, having completed our first Scottish pub for Marstons - The Pine Marten, Dunbar.

It seems no time since we completed our part in their extensive re-fit and sadly we were back again at the weekend to strip out flood damaged sound and lighting gear. You can see where the water got to on this sound rack which is currently in our workshop for assessment. Hope you are all straight and back trading soon!

On a happier theme were were busy last week with RF mapping for Stoneleigh Showground to provide a complete change of radio microphone facilities to bring the entire site into line with the changes of channel 38 legislation.

The criteria required the largest image possible in each of the three areas, all with individual sound tracks for the different videos or images shown.

The audio installation design was simple, but with images in excess of six feet, with a ceiling height of only teen feet, plasma or LCD screens were ruled out. With people masking the images if standard throw projection were to be used, a different solution was required.

After extensive research and trials, we recommended three ceiling mounted short throw projectors producing six feet wide images from a sixteen inch throw, all media server controlled. These were colour co-ordinated to blend seamlessly with the all white décor.

Using high quality ceiling speakers to compliment the down lighters, recessed screens, a central matrix for both audio and video control, we have produced a very easy to use package in a multi-functional, clean lined venue, easily upgradable should requirements dictate.

British Trust for Ornithology, Conference Room

Given a design brief for a multi-functional conference system that was to be sympathetic to a Grade II listed building, a stylish solution using Martin Audio Omniline speakers, short-throw rear projection and an in-built projection screen surround was realised.

Unable to secure anything to the exterior walls, we elected to hang the mini line-array system from the supporting oak beams which also facilitated the cable runs to be completely hidden. The Lectern has multi AV inputs to allow connection with any configuration of media sources coupled with two high spec microphones. A 16 channel Yamaha powered mixer gives the system open ended compatibility, giving even the most demanding of conference organisers exactly what is required.

In addition, an extremely discrete infrared assisted hearing system was installed, allowing the use of their own earpieces for those requiring it, giving a totally hygienic solution.

Utilising Martin Audio Line array technology and amplification to suit, complete with digital Consoles for both front of House and on-stage monitoring, a state of the art ROBE lighting system comprising a motorised four truss design to hang the 30 strong moving head lighting effects controlled by an Avolites Digital lighting console, we created and programmed a venue achieving national recognition and praise for its’ facilities, indeed winning the “live music venue of the year” award. With an interior design by Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen the sound and lighting systems were installed sympathetically so as not to detract from the overall scheme. Two years in the making we are justly proud of this project, doubly so as it is in our home town.

Based in an old fire station, a system capable of supporting live music as well as DJ and background music was the functional brief. To include multiple screens with multiple inputs, lighting effects and live camera feeds, we designed a system able to change the mood and feel at will.

As you move throughout the venue the sound, video and lighting are zoned to give complete control from either behind the bar or from the DJ console, ensuring you are part of the overall experience wherever you choose to stand or sit.

Transforming this tired old site into a modern sports bar gave us the opportunity to install the latest in HD technology for all the screens and sound and lighting systems that even the most demanding DJ would be more than happy to use.

The ground floor comprises a dancefloor area with large Ibiza club style lighting and sound systems giving the full on club experience, whilst the first floor has a chill out room with two 47” 3D TVs for the more laid back or that private party feel.

Featuring full HD screens and utilising HDMI distribution and control over Cat 5, three sky feeds allow the complete sports package for the most discerning sports spectator alongside a “text to screen” facility for customer interaction.
